"I undertook this degree because I felt that projects were more than just design - the real challenge was the approach and strategies required to construct projects in complex and changing environments. I chose UNSW because of the quality and experience of the teaching faculty.
The program struck a perfect balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of the construction and property industries, and equipped me with the necessary skills for a seamless transition into my professional career. The broad-based learning I experienced at UNSW exposed me to the critical role of project managers and property developers, which centres on the ability to plan and manage a variety of project elements, including design, engineering, commercial, legal and risk. The task of planning and carrying out group work was itself a preparation for the "real world".
After graduation I worked for four years as a Contracts Administrator for one of Australia's largest construction companies on a number of multi-million dollar shopping centre developments. This exposure helped me to develop a comprehensive understanding of construction practices and strategies. I have since moved to a property development company, where as a Development Manager, I undertake development projects (approx $50m) from early feasibilities and authority approvals, through to design and finally construction."
