Environmental Engineers work in a wide variety of industries, including chemical, pharmaceutical, water/wastewater treatment, mining, and manufacturing, and can be involved in hazardous waste remediation, air pollution control, facilities planning and environmental consulting.

You might find yourself working with a water company on water loss initiatives, consulting on major tender projects such as recycling or desalination plants or working in developing countries with aid groups.

Find out more about Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers are concerned with the environmental impact of engineering activities. They apply their broad knowledge of engineering and environmental processes in identifying environmental problems and in developing effective solutions to them. Their role is central in most engineering projects in the provision of sustainable infrastructure. They also coordinate the activities of specialist groups such as biologists, ecologists and geologists within major projects.

Environmental engineers:

  • Improve methods of determining the extent of contamination at polluted sites.
  • Improve treatment methods for cleaning up polluted sites.
  • Develop uses for recycled materials.
  • Reduce the volumes of solid and hazardous waste through conservation and reuse.
  • Develop improved methods for treating water, wastewater, and polluted air.


Environmental Engineers can choose to study professional electives from Water Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transport Engineering, Hazardous Waste Treatment, and Project Management.

Environmental engineers have an aptitude for maths and science, while also being able to creatively solve open ended problems using systematic thinking and individual flair.

Who should apply?

In addition to meeting the general entrance requirements for a Co-op Scholar (see Are you the next Co-op scholar?), successful Environmental Engineering applicants should:

  • Want to apply their knowledge to the solution of practical problems,
  • Have an aptitude for mathematics and physics at school,
  • Want to use your knowledge of engineering and environmental processes to identify environmental problems and help develop effective solutions.

The recommended knowledge for entry into the UNSW Co-op Program in Environmental Engineering is:

  • HSC Mathematics Extension 1
  • Physics or Chemistry
